PLUS! Every contestant is awarded at least $100, a Culture Shapers t-shirt, a certificate of participation and a video of their performance posted online.

About the FINAL...

  • The FINAL features the 1st and 2nd Place Winners from each of the monthly competitions in the previous season.
  • Each contestant is given up to 7 1/2 minutes to perform TWO pop or broadway songs of contrasting styles, with piano accompaniment only.
  • No other props may be used - only the singer may be on stage.
  • The performance is before a live audience at the Cultural Arts Center, (Click here for map) in Northwest Houston.
  • The contestants will be evaluated by a panel of three judges. The winners will be announced at the end of the evening.
  • The contestants are evaluated in the following five areas...
    1. VOCAL ABILITY - How solid and well developed is their voice?
    2. INTERPRETATION - How well does the performer get us to understand their piece?
    3. MOVEMENT - Is their body language, staging, and choreography done well and appropriate for the song?
    4. STAGE PRESENCE - How pleasing, comfortable, and in control is the performer and do they connect with the audience?
    5. OVERALL SHOWMANSHIP - Do the above four elements fit together in a total package and performance?
  • Every finalist is awarded at least $100, a Culture Shapers t-shirt, a certificate of participation and a video of their performance posted online.

The Judges...

Dr. Betty Devine

Dr. Betty Devine founded and directs The Houston Choral Society which just celebrated its 15-year anniversary and has performed major works with orchestras including the Weber Requiem, the Verdi Requiem, and Carmina Burana in such venues as The Wortham Theater Center and Moores Opera House.

Ginger Gibson

Born into a family of professional musicians and music educators, Ginger Gibson gave her first stage performance at the tender age of three, and began her formal studies at age eight. She soon began a piano concertizing career, even winning two instrumental arrangement awards, but shifted her concentration to voice after winning over 30 vocal contests before graduation, including first place at the annual vocal competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Dr. Todd Miller

Since 1996 he has served as Professor of Music at Kingwood College, Kingwood, Texas, where he teaches voice, conducts the Chamber Singers and directs the Summer Opera Workshop. In addition he is the artistic director and conductor of the Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra.
