About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for more than $85,000 in cash prizes in six categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $20. Entry forms may be downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver and pickup the entries at the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries! This year, jurying will take place on Sunday, November 2nd. The top ten finalists in each category will be personally invited to the exclusive Awards Night, where the winners will be finally announced!

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. About the Jurors...

Richard Fielden - Sculpture was the first art I noticed and the first art I tried to do. After nearly 30 years doing commercial art, design and illustration, I have given myself over to sculpture. Now, years later, I have been a teacher, artist and sculptor full-time with many public commissions to my credit. Have done large public commissions: Enron baseball (bronze) Colombe d'or bird (concrete and gold leaf) Herman Hospital (life gift) Texas Children's Hospital (tree of life). Have sold many small bronzes to collections around the U.S. and in Europe.

Alida Harville - I've had a passion for sculpture since the first day I sculpted my first mud design. This is my 12th year of teaching art and I love every minute of it! It absolutely floors me what a young person can do when they try their very best and pull out abilities they never knew they had.

Bridgette Mongeon - a writer and sculptor who is known for her portraits of such entertainers as BB King, Bill Monroe and Willie Nelson as well as her numerous portraits of pets and children. Her newest commission is a life-size newsboy created in bronze, which will be placed in the State Capitol building in Austin, Texas. She works and teaches from her Heights Studio. www.creativesculpture.com

R. Michael Stovall - Graduate SWT with a BS in Commercial Art and ABS in all level Art Education. 23 years in public education teaching art in Bellville High School. Sculpture and Pottery are both large parts of my curriculum, as I love to work in clay. I have attended several sculpture workshops and cast a bronze called "I Have A Son".
