About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for nearly $70,000 in cash prizes in six categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $20. Entry forms may be downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver and pickup the entries at the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries. This year, jurying took place on Sunday, November 2nd. The top ten finalists in each category were invited to an elegant awards ceremony on November 20th, where the winners were finally announced before a live audience.

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. About the Jurors...

Sarah Beth Baca is a painter and mother of two. She has a degree in art and marketing from Houston Baptist University. She has painted for 10 years, specializing in abstract and expressionistic oil and acrylic pieces. She has taught art lessons and completed many commission pieces.

Joseph Culotta has been a local artist and art educator in the Houston Area for over thirty five years. He is art consultant for Sax Arts & Crafts, a national art company from Wisconsin. He conducts workshops for art educators and artists in the southeast Texas area. He has served on the Advisory Council of the Texas Art Educators Association, and has served as Past President of the Houston Art Educators Association. He currently serves on the board of City Art Works a non-profit after school art program for children in elementary school in the greater Houston area. The settings for his exhibitions have ranged from local restaurants to the law offices of Jaworski and Associates. His art work has also been displayed at the Archway Gallery, Pilie’ Showroom in the Decorative Center, and currently at the Market Gallery in Galveston, Texas.

Jane B. Honovich graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She taught Middle School Art for 5 years in Spring Branch ISD at Landrum Middle School. After marriage and raising a family, she was a Pre-School teacher and Director at Westminister Weekday School. She returned to teaching art at Grady Middle School(HISD) 14 years ago. Her students consistently received Honors at Scholastic, HISD, HAEA, and TAEA shows. She retired in 2007 and has been pursuing her art career. She was accepted into The Glassell Show in 2004 as well as being accepted in 2008 into the Live Oak Art Center show in Columbus, Texas and Upstairs Show at Glassell by Brian Portman.
