About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for nearly $70,000 in cash prizes in six categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $20. Entry forms will be e-mailed to the teacher after online registration, and parents, students or teachers deliver and pickup the entries at the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries. Jurying will take place in November. The top ten finalists in each category will be invited to an elegant awards ceremony in December, where the winners will be finally announced before a live audience.

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. About the Jurors...

Sarah Beth Baca is a working artist and mother of two with a degree in Art and Marketing from Houston Baptist University. Her paintings are done with with bold color and a variety of media, most recently mixed media with oil. The subject matter ranges from abstract to expressive images of nature. She has been painting for 11 years and uses various media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, and mixed media. She has completed many varied art projects, including commissioned pieces, three of which are displayed at Houston Baptist University. She has taught private art lessons to high school students and adults. Her art has been displayed in a wide range of venues as well as many private collections.

Joe Culotta has been a local artist and art educator in the Houston Area for over thirty five years. He is art consultant for Sax Arts & Crafts, a national art company from Wisconsin. He conducts workshops for art educators and artists in the southeast Texas area. He has served on the Advisory Council of the Texas Art Educators Association, and has served as Past President of the Houston Art Educators Association. He currently serves on the board of the Glassel School of Art. The settings for his exhibitions have ranged from local restaurants to the law offices of Jaworski and Associates. His art work has also been displayed at the Archway Gallery, Pilie’ Showroom in the Decorative Center, and currently at the Market Gallery in Galveston, Texas.

Jeff Farmer is a professional artist specializing in two dimensional, representational oil and acrylic paintings. Intrigued by the contrast between light and dark, Chiaroscuro has become his style of preference. His works cover a broad spectrum of subject matter, ranging from still life, to portraits, to landscapes and wildlife. He's traveled the world extensively in search of such subject matter, visiting such places as the South Pacific, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Canadian Rockies. Mr. Farmer's works have been on display at such venues as The Witte Museum, San Antonio, TX; The Carnegie Museum of Natural Science, Pittsburgh, PA; and The Neville Public Museum, Greenbay, WI. His works also hang in private collections across the United States and in Canada, England, and New Zealand.
