About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for more than $85,000 in cash prizes in seven categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, film, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $15. Entry forms are downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver the entries to the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries! This year, jurying took place on three Sundays in January. The top ten finalists in each category are personally invited to the exclusive Awards Night, where the winners are finally announced!

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. About Young Voices of Houston...

In 2005, Culture Shapers expanded into the performing arts, with the Young Voices of Houston performing arts contest. Featuring ten to twelve of the top vocalists from area high schools, Young Voices provides these talented students the opportunity to perform vocal works for a live audience and compete for cash prizes! Young Voices of Houston competitions are held several times throughout the year. Click here to learn more about Young Voices of Houston!

Karen Sloan is presented the Grand Prize in Film by Paul Sarvadi, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Administaff.

Why invest in Culture Shapers?

Help keep the arts alive in our schools… imagine the difference you can make in a young person’s life!

In 1999, after the tragedy at Columbine High School, a group of businessmen and church leaders began to ask what they might do to make a difference in the lives of our local area teens. The answer was to serve them, encourage them and give them hope for the future.

Through the annual Culture Shapers visual and performing arts contests, business men and women have the opportunity to make a positive investment in the lives of thousands of students in seven counties all around the Greater Houston Area!

The results have been incredible! In just six years, we have awarded more than a half
million dollars to student artists, thanks to our corporate sponsors, Administaff and
The Nathaniel Foundation, as well as many, many other area businesses.

One of those Grand Prizes meant that Derek Shumate could go to the art school of his dreams in New York City! For another of our winners, the Grand Prize she won meant the difference between finishing the semester at school or having to drop out to find work.

In 2002, we doubled the prize money to over $70,000, and today, the contest annually awards nearly $150,000 in cash prizes to students in both visual and performing arts! Each year continues to be bigger and better - more categories, more entries and of course, more prize money!

Our goal is simple - to help young men and women all over the city to launch their careers in the arts, and become “Culture Shapers”.

We are committed to this goal for years to come, but we will not be successful without the generous support of our Corporate Sponsors just like you - folks who are committed to helping the next generation get a jump-start on their careers! Join the ranks of our Corporate Sponsors – Administaff, The Nathaniel Foundation, GodsMoneyMan, Trendmaker Homes and many, many others – and discover the difference you can make a young person’s life!

We would love to meet you and discuss the many different opportunities by which you can support Culture Shapers financially!

Once per month, a dozen talented singers compete for $1,000 in cash prizes and the chance to advance to the FINAL Young Voices of Houston Competition, held annually. The monthly semifinal competitions attract 300 to 500 folks from all across Houston. The annual event typically draws a crowd of 500 and is an elegant evening! Cash prizes at the final event total $5,000. Consider sponsoring either a monthly event or the annual FINAL event for great exposure that says you are passionate about investing into the next generation!

Sponsor a Row at the annual Visual Arts Awards Ceremony

The highlight of the annual Visual Arts contest is the extravagant awards ceremony where the winners of the contest are finally announced before a live audience of 1,000 or more! This exciting evening has been informally referred to as the “Academy Awards for the Visual Arts” and is an emotionally-charged evening. Consider sponsoring a row of seats at this event, which will feature your business name on it, plus recognition in the program and the evening’s agenda.
