About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for more than $85,000 in cash prizes in seven categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, film, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $15. Entry forms are downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver the entries to the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries! This year, jurying took place on three Sundays in January. The top ten finalists in each category are personally invited to the exclusive Awards Night, where the winners are finally announced!

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. You can become a Culture Shapers Volunteer!

Dedicated volunteers are what make Culture Shapers such a great success! Culture Shapers Volunteers are a vibrant, energetic group of folks who are passionate about making a difference in the next generation and having fun in the process! Here are a few of the ways that you can help…

Recruiting Potential Sponsors

In order to even have a contest, we need support from the community. Volunteers in this area make presentations to businesses and corporations to introduce the contest and enlist their support. This is a great way to make an important contribution and get to know the overall contest better.

Contest Presentations to Schools

Before teachers or students can enter artwork, they need to know what Culture Shapers is all about. Volunteers in this area make presentations to teachers and/or students to introduce the contest and encourage their participation. This is a wonderful way get into the schools and to continue building relationships with teachers and administrators in your area.

Wine Auction and Fundraising Events

A major source of income for Culture Shapers is our annual Wine Auction, as well as several other fundraisers throughout the year. Obviously, these events require many people in order to run them with excellence and ensure their success. Volunteers in this area help with registration, serving food and beverages, and many other details. This is a great way to get in front of many people who can help sponsor the contest and enjoy a spectacular event at the same time!

Assisting with Art Check-In

The entry period for the art contest is only three days long, and as you can imagine, is VERY busy! Additionally, we are open for extended hours when we accept the Sculpture entries. Volunteers in this area help check-in and organize the 1,500+ pieces that are brought in. This is an interesting way to meet many students and teachers and be the first to see the artwork up-close!

Picking up/Returning Entries

Many of the schools that participate are located far from the Culture Shapers offices. At the beginning of the contest, volunteers drive to the scheduled schools, pick up the artwork, and deliver it to our offices. Then, at the end of the contest, all the entries have to be returned to the individual districts or schools that participated. This is a great help to many students who might not have any other way of getting their piece entered due to transportation issues.

Data Entry

As the entries are submitted, each student’s information has to be preserved for future use. Volunteers in this area help to enter the data from entry forms into our online database. This is an excellent opportunity for people with computer access to help from their homes.

Judging Days

After all the entries have been collected, there is the massive job of selecting the finalists. On the Friday before our Judging Days, volunteers in this area help to set up the artwork and get the rooms ready. The Saturdays of judging, volunteers assist the judges with any clerical work or needs, help serve food and drinks, and then move and organize the pieces after they are judged. This is an exciting day with an excellent opportunity to see all of the artwork that’s been entered into the contest!

Due Diligence

After the judging is complete, it’s time to verify the eligibility of each winner. Volunteers in this area get to make the notification phone calls to excited parents and teachers of the winners. This is just one more way to start relationships with people who will be more than happy to talk your ear off!

Awards Night Production!

No contest would be complete without an elegant Awards Night to finish it off. Volunteers in this area help to set up finalists’ artwork, decorations, tables, or even usher, greet finalists, and take tickets. This is the best way to see the actual impact of the contest on the lives of all involved!
