About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for more than $85,000 in cash prizes in six categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $20. Entry forms are downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver the entries to the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries! This year, jurying will take place on Sunday, November 2nd. The top ten finalists in each category are personally invited to the exclusive Awards Night, where the winners are finally announced!

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. About Young Voices of Houston...

In 2005, Culture Shapers expanded into the performing arts, with the Young Voices of Houston performing arts contest. Featuring ten to twelve of the top vocalists from area high schools, Young Voices provides these talented students the opportunity to perform vocal works for a live audience and compete for cash prizes! Young Voices Of Houston- December 1st

The first five approved contestants are…….

1-BRITTANY THAXTON is a 17 yr old senior at Klein High School. Not only has she been in numerous service activities with her school and church, but she has been performing and dancing since age 3 and has been singing for the past two years. This past summer she was Anita in West Side Story at Playhouse 1960 and just recently finished a role in the BFG at her school. Brittany loves to perform and wants to thank all of her family and friends for their endless support. She will be singing “Don’t Rain on my Parade”.

2-KIRSTEN JOHNSON is a Senior at Cy-Fair High school who loves to be on the stage. She has participated in HFAC’s production of Godspell, as well as the same show at her own high school. She has also assisted backstage as stage manager on You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown at her school as well. She has also been participant in her school choir for four years now, and has been a member of the top varsity choir for two years. She will sing “The Miller’s Son”

3-ROBERT ABASOLO as a Junior at Klein Forest. This is his first year in varsity theatre and choir, and has been in theatre since the 5th grade. He is this years social coordinator for the drama dept at KF. His favorite role ever played was recently playing Snoopy for his high school musical ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’. Right now he is pursuing Musical Theatre because he feels that this is what God is calling him to do. He will be singing “Suppertime”.

4-MISTIE CASTLEBERRY is a Sophomore at Caney Creek. She has been in 6 plays (doing my 6th one right now), lettered in academics and drama, won two awards at one act play comp. and was district champs. Mistie has been a singer ever since she was little! She has sang many-a-karoake! She’s a hardworker and dedicated to her passion. She will be singing “Here We Go Again”

5-LOUIS ADAMS-DIAZ is a senior at College Park highs chool in Conroe. He has performed befoer Josh Groban, at the superbowl in Houston, in front of George Bush Sr. Jr. and Bill Clinton. Louis has been in varsity choir 4 years in a row and has made ones on all of his solos witch include 2 class ones and one class 2. He was a part of the Houston childrens chorus where he traveled to scotland, England, and Japan! He is at the moment practicing for auditions to region and plans to make it to all state! He plans to continue his career in music with either his voice or his talent on the drums: witch ever one comes first. He has not selected his song yet.
