About the Visual Arts Contest...

The annual Culture Shapers Visual Arts Contest enables student artists to compete for more than $85,000 in cash prizes in six categories... drawing, painting, electronic media, mixed media, photography and sculpture. The contest takes place in the Fall, and is open to all High School Students in Harris, Waller, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

Students receive a commemorative t-shirt with their entry fee of $20. Entry forms are downloaded from the website and parents, students or teachers deliver the entries to the drop-off location.

Each year, the Culture Shapers Volunteer Staff receive about 1,500 entries! This year, jurying will take place on Sunday, November 2nd. The top ten finalists in each category are personally invited to the exclusive Awards Night, where the winners are finally announced!

About the Culture Shapers Jurying Process...

Culture Shapers jurors are a combination of educators and professionals, who come highly recommended to us by other notable organizations, such as the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), as well as others. Many of our jurors have experience both in and out of the classroom, which gives them a unique and valuable perspective on evaluating student artwork. Truth Triumphs!

Invariably every year we have one or two kids who don’t tell the truth about how they did their work, etc. I know of one student who bragged later that he had used a copywright and it was missed (in 2005 I believe). That’s a wrong lesson to learn. Eventually karma catches up with all of us.

We are not interested in embarrassing anyone. But integrity is another word for art as I see it. We just had a student disqualified who was high up in the money! We have one who was in the 10-15 placement as well, so they really weren’t going to win any money regardless.

Wednesday we start calling teachers and parents. If the odds hold up, we might find one out of those 70 finalists who really didn’t do the work and in that case #11 becomes #10- and no one knows. :-)

If you did make the top 15 in each category, hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to have your teacher and your parents get a phone call from us over the next three days, because that means you were in the top ten! If no call, you did well enough to place 11-15th out of hundreds of entries.

Answer the phone! :-)
